PRETTY/UGLY is an on-going project, and also the graduate thesis in Design for Social Innovation, by Tara Maurice & Tianyue Zhang. PRETTY/UGLY is radically rethinking sustainability through content creation, live events, and strategic collaborations in work that communicates the interdependence of man and nature. With a sense of urgency and possibility, PRETTY/UGLY’s work makes clear, “There is no garbage in nature.”

How might we radically rethink sustainability in fashion in order to drive brands and consumers toward a regenerative future that acknowledges the interdependence of Man and Nature?

The Fashion System/publised on GOOD TROUBLE

BACKGROUND

The globalfashion industry now employs 65 MILLION people. The fashion industry is now responsible for 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, that’s more than the entire airline industry. As consumers, we purchase 80 BILLION new clothing items a year, that’s an increase of 400% in the last twenty years. 87% of the clothing we buy is discarded within 3 years of its original purchase.

Fashion now is a system that makes things for consumers to mostly throw away. While in the living world, everything that dies becomes food for something else. Garbage is a MAN-MADE thing.

STRATEGY

The scope of the project demanded that PRETTY/UGLY blend hard research with design and art making at every stage. At the center is the philosophy, that there is NO GARBAGE IN NATURE, and then operates in three strategic spaces: Education, Communication & Mobilization.

METHODOLOGY

The work of PRETTY/ULGY is a combination of ARTISTIC and STRATEGIC methodologies.

The Methodology of CRAFT:
Design work that employs instinct and intuition. The ability to manifest insight from loose information and inputs to be assembled into a cohesive artifact that has meaning and resonance for the viewer and audience. The act of evoke feeling to inanimate works that compels the viewer to take action.

The Methodology of SCIENCE:
Design work that employs primary and secondary research, literature review, survey methodology and data review. Tactical and observational in approach that yields quantitative material to hold up a body of work.
